Hey guys !
Most of you have watched me long enough to see that I love drawing fantasy creatures, especially dragons
And well, let's just say, I've seen a lot of arguing on the internet about "wyverns" and "dragons". So, you know what this journal is all about, I suppose.
But let's have it clear-- I personally do not think that just because a dragon does not have 4 legs and 2 wings, it has to be deemed "not a dragon".
I've had people, in Instant Messaging conversations such as Skype, MSN and the like, tell me that my dragons were not dragons
Yes, I use the word "wyvern" to describe some of my characters, mostly because they have 2 wings and 2 legs, but they are dragons in the end. And to be honest, I consider Wyverns to be a subspecies of the Dragon class anyway.
Not all dragons are the same, just look at a Western dragon and an Eastern Dragon...
By Stanley MorrisonThey are different
types of dragons, clearly. People usually say : "If it doesn't have six limbs including a pair of wings, it is not a dragon."
So the Eastern Dragon, also called Asian dragon, is not actually a dragon, then ? Yet it has always been called "Eastern/Asian
Dragon" ? Hm.
People also say that a Wyvern is supposed to be a poisonous creature, sporting a poisonous barb at the tip of its tail, and spitting poisonous gas or has venomous fangs. I have also seen this kind of comments on various websites, but one of them I just have to quote :
"
Unlike Dragons whose tail is not spiked, they are larger beasts and the have four legs and their wings aren’t attached to their upper body but to their middle"
....
So if it has a spiked tail in a way, it's not a dragon, huh ? So those two have six limbs but are not dragons because they have spiked tails ?
Please.
Things are changing, evolving. What should we say to those people who create poison dragons ?
They have six limbs but the poison part makes them what ? A wyvern does not have six limbs. A dragon is supposed to breathe fire only, they say. So what are they, hm ?
And what of the people who create ice dragons, storm dragons, earth dragons and so on ?
The Dragon class is not just composed of those creatures with six limbs that can breathe fire. Just like the Equine is not made just of horses, just like the Canine are not only domestic dogs, and Feline domestic cats.
"So hey, you! Yes,
you there!
Creating dragon characters that can spit poison, acid, lightning, light, or even ice and wait...earth breath ? What the heck this is blasphemy! The things you create are not dragons!"
"OH MY GOD YOU MADE A THING WITH FEATHERS and you call it "Dragon" ?! Wrong !!!"
...
- People will call "dragon" what they think fits their culture best as to what a dragon is like in their culture. Again, the example of Western and Eastern dragon. If in some country's folklore dragons have only four limbs and not six, people from that country will call the mythical creatures that resemble it "dragon", because their folklore says so.
In my opinion, it is wrong to keep on writing things like : "You say dragon, but your thing is actually a wyvern. -_- "
Hm...and ?
People act like they know-it-alls a tad too much these days.
More and more people are classifying their wyverns, drakes, wyrms and the like as a subspecies of the Dragon class, but a lot of others won't agree to it and bash them just because of one simple reason-- change. They just won't accept the fact things like this can change over time.
So all in all, if you create wyvern characters, drake characters and whatnot, and people tell you you are not creating dragon characters and don't know "shit" what you're doing-- do not bow.
I personally won't. My wyverns are dragons just like my six-limbed reptiles are dragons (shown above), just not the same
kind physically.
So, if people want to keep arguing with me that my characters are a blasphemy to the name of "Dragons", well, by all means, have fun wasting your time.
And to make it clear, or to sum up : Dragons come in different forms, often influenced by culture/folklore, and thus can have different looks and abilities. They can have four limbs and no wings, four limbs including wings, six limbs including wings, six limbs and no wings...eight wings why the heck not!
You create what you like, your story is your world, your world and its lore are what
you make it. Not what others want you to make it.
I think that's pretty much all~
Thanks for reading
Have a nice day
